[INTERVIEW] DrunkDol

※DrunkDol is a light and youthful spin-off version of Ilgan Sports' famous interview 'Drunk Talk'.

Like their team name, girl group Lovelyz was lovely. Doing 'DrunkDol' in the clear weather on the rooftop made them excited. They also said hi to the people who was grilling meat at the next building and giggled.

It was the first time that Lovelyz, the 'Hype Group', had a drink together. Kei had a non-alcoholic Cinderella, Mijoo and Jisoo had Peach Crush, Baby Soul had a chocolate martini, Yein a White Russian, JIN an Orange Blossom, and Sujeong and Jiae each had a June Bug. Sujeong and Jiae seemed relaxed and ordered another round of June Bug. It looked like a get-together after their first win.

For Lovelyz, May 16th is a historic day. After debuting for 2 years and 6 months, they got their first win on SBS MTV 'The Show'. Asked about their impression, they said, "It still hasn't sunk in yet," managing a moved expression. There were changes in their lives after their win. They gave smartphones to none other than the members. During their free time, they were busy taking pictures and exchanging 'Talk' (KakaoTalk) between the members. They were Lovelyz who were happy with a smartphone.

Lovelyz's excited hearts were represented by their palate. They finished various snacks in an instant and ordered some more. The restaurant owner was surprised at their palate that was unlike that of a girl group. From now on, this will lead to days where Lovelyz's lovely smiles would not leave them.

- This is an official question. What is your tolerance level? The standard is soju.
Kei "I absolutely can't drink alcohol, so I had non-alcoholic drink."
Mijoo "I've had 1-2 bottles and passed out. I was dizzy so I feel like mine is 1 bottle."
Baby Soul(from now, Soul) "It's embarrassing to say but 5 bottles. I actually don't get drunk a lot. I'm like a robot if I drink more than 5 bottles."

Jisoo "When I drink 4-5 glasses, I feel good."
Yein "I'm like Jisoo unnie.(All the members said, "You're lying.") I've never drank soju. I'm a beer person. My limit is 2 big cans."
JIN "My limit is 1 bottle. For beer, it's 1-2 small bottles?"
Sujeong "I've never drank to the point that I was drunk. I think my limit is 2 bottles."
Jiae "I've never been drunk, but I don't like beer. I often drink champagne."

- Do you have a drinking party with your members?
Sujeong "We drank once during a company dinner but we've never drank together before, just among us. The unnies don't really enjoy drinking."

- What kind of snacks (to accompany drinks) do you like?
Yein "I like eating crab sticks while drinking canned beers."
Jiae "When I drink with my parents, I often eat fruits and fish cake soup."
Mijoo "When I drink beer, it's delicious to eat sesame oil laver."
Baby Soul "When I drink soju, it has to be sashimi. I really like sashimi."

- Because this is an interview while drinking cocktail, how do you feel about it?
Sujeong "It's playful."
Yein "It was my dream to drink cocktail with the unnies after I turned 20 years old. It happened because of 'DrunkDol' so I feel really great."

- You won first place some time ago. How do you feel?
Kei "Because it was the first place that we really wanted, all 8 of us cried so much. I didn't imagine (winning) so I didn't prepare a speech. At that time, I couldn't remember what I said. We wanted to have dinner together that night but we couldn't because there was a schedule so it was unfortunate. But we had a party at the director's house after that and it was really fun."
Sujeong "It was a first place after debuting for 2 and a half years. We had been congratulating people who won first place but this time, we got to hear it said to us so it was really touching and I felt honored."
Mijoo "It was really cute when Sujeongie said, "(They) saw us to congratulate us" while crying. I immediately stopped crying when I saw her. (Laughs)"

- If you win #1 again, will the feelings be the same as that day?
Sujeong "Of course. First place is always precious. There's also various first places. Wouldn't newer feelings come? I'm anticipating."

- You fulfilled your first place promise of cosplaying, but they weren't pretty characters. Soul even dressed up as Joker.
Soul "Our CEO and 4 members of Infinite-sunbaenim have dressed up as Joker. It's like Woollim has a relationship with Joker. It was a character that I myself wanted to dress up as."

- Did the members also choose their own characters?
All "Yes"
Sujeong "It was a hero and villain concept. We decided on a meeting. There were suggestions for Disney concept and princess concept."
Jiae "I really wanted to be 'Uhwudong' though. I was sad.(Laughs)"

- Is there an award that you want to receive in the future?
Jisoo "We want to receive first place on public broadcast. We also want to go on Golden Disk Award and receive an album award. We're an ambitious group.(Laughs)"

- Soul is from Gwangju. Did you fix your dialect?
Soul "When I came to Seoul for the first time, my dialect was really heavy but I've fixed it a lot. The company's vice manager told me to fix it."
Jiae "When she's on the phone with her hometown friends, her voice and tone turned different. She said, "Mwoyeo" and "Mwodeonya". (T/N: Standard pronunciation is "Mwoya")
JIN "I was born in Seoul but my parents are from Busan so I picked up the dialect accent. Our CEO told me to fix it but I still have some left. It comes out when I'm on the phone with my mom."
Jisoo "My mom is from the Chungcheong Province. There are times where "Mwohaneun gyeo" like how old men and women say it comes out." (T/N: Standard pronunciation is "Mwohaneun geo")

- You're a girl group in your third year. Have your dreams when you debuted came true?
Sujeong "I thought, "When we turn 3, we'll be able to go to the convenient store." Because at that time, they (the company) even inspected our fridge. Now we can go to the convenient store easily and it's a big change for us. It's a dream come true.(Laughs)"
Yein "In the beginning, 6 of us shared a huge room at the dorm. I hoped that when we turn 3 years old, I would get a roommate at a new dorm. Now, 2 people share one room at the new dorm."

- Who are roommates?
Mijoo "Kei·Mijoo, Jiae·Yein, Myungeun·Jisoo, Soul·Sujeong"
All "We decided by doing the ladder game."

- Is there any complaints?
All "It's destined. Everything is right."

- Is there anyone who uses the room messily?
Sujeong "I'll be honest. It's me, Sujeong. I only care about the cleanliness of bathrooms or places with water. I clean/sweep all the time but I don't organize my things. I'm like a larvae that sheds its skin, I prefer to tidy it up all at once"
Mijoo "When Sujeongie passes by the living room it creates a trail. No. It creates a red carpet. We will never clean it up.(Laughs)"

- Is there no one who pretends to be neat?
All "We don't think so."
JIN "Sujeongie and Soul unnie's room is the smallest so it's not messy."
Mijoo "In comparison, JIN·Jisoo's room is the biggest yet it's the most disorganized."
JIN "We have a lot of boxes. It's filled with gift boxes from fans."
Jisoo "I clean well but there's not enough storage space so we can't organize them. I always look for an accessory box but it's troublesome to buy it so I never did."

- Is there any member who snores?
JIN "I found a way to wake Jisoo unnie up when she snores. She stopped snoring when I tapped her but at some point, she became immune to it and didn't wake up. She answered when I called her, but now she doesn't wake up. I'm a bit sensitive so now I wear earphones to sleep. Sometimes I still hear her snores through the music but it's okay.(Laughs)"
Jisoo "So these days, she didn't wake me up. I thought I didn't snore."

- Mijoo's pronunciation of 'H' is very pointed.
Mijoo "I think it's because I use a lot of nasal voice. What's wrong with fans? S'h'eriously."

- Do you not have any stage fright?
JIN "I actually have one."
Jisoo "I have a fear of masks. When the Saw mask appears, I get really scared."
Yein "I had a fear of tablets. When I was in elementary school, I saw a horror movie 'One Missed Call' and (a character) had acute gastritis and went to a big hospital. Because he was forced to eat a tablet. He said he didn't want to and his father got angry and told him to chew it so he did and it was really bitter. After that, I get nauseous when I see tablets and I couldn't eat it. So when I'm sick, I ate herbal medicine. I've overcome it now. It's pretty embarrassing to ask to grind the tablet into powder because I can't eat it."

- How much did you prepare for your debut?
Yein "Everyone's training time is different but it took 4 months to prepare for debut after the decision had been made."

- Who has the longest training period?
Soul "I prepared with Infinite-sunbaenim. I trained for 5 and a half years. I first got in as a rapper."

- Why did you change from a rapper into a vocalist?
Soul "Before going to an applied music academy, I thought that I sang well, but I was shocked when I couldn't do it during the level test. So I thought, "So I can't sing," but I entered the company and was asked to sing a lot."

- Yein only trained for 4 months before debuting.
Sujeong "Yeinnie didn't get enough training before debuting, so she felt lacking after debut."
Jiae "Yeinnie had a hard time because she debuted after a slump during her trainee days."

- You are Woollim's first group after 4 years, and its first girl group. It would've been a burden.
Soul "Infinite-sunbaenim did well. There was the title of "little sister" behind "girl group" too. We were called "Woollim's girl group" too. It'd be a lie if I said that it wasn't a burden."

- "Lovelyz's younger brothers" is coming out soon. It would be a burden for them too so is there something you'd like to say to them?
Jiae "Don't change, kids."

- You're in your third year but you still have the same mind as you did on your debut.
Sujeong "We didn't lose our original intentions. Our teamwork has gotten better too. There were programs that we wanted to go on before debut and one by one we got on those programs so every time we hear the schedules, we feel thankful."
Jiae "We've gotten skilled at doing shows. Rather than losing our original intentions, I think we've grown."
Soul "Doing a show is harder than I thought so I think I've formed a will to work harder."

- Is there any unfortunate program?
Jiae "'Lovelyz Loves Canada' was a bit unfortunate. It might be an excuse but the weather wasn't good. We worked hard in filming but it's quite unfortunate. If we do a second season, I think we will be able to make a really fun episode. I want to go to Hawaii for season 2."
Jisoo "'Real Men.' It was my first time appearing alone without the members and it was also my first time in an army, so I froze a lot. The other female soldiers were my seniors too. I got close to the 3 of them and asked, "What should I do?" Fortunately, the unnies took care of me well. The program has ended but I can do it again."

- Is there an episode that makes you think of 'Real Men'?
Jisoo "I gritted my teeth and trained but I couldn't beat Lee Siyoung-sunbaenim. It was because she did very well at everything. And I beat 3 male seniors in sit-up."

- Have you ever traveled together?
Jiae "When we get a long break later, we want to go to Osaka, Japan. We always went to Japan to work."
Jisoo "Recently, we were given a 2-hour free time during a promotion in Japan and I went shopping at a general store. I bought 8 bags of Konnyaku Jelly. I should've bought more.(Laughs)"

- Why do you have so many male fans?
Sujeong "We thought about it as well with amazement. There's also a lot of people who took notice of girl groups for the first time while having a social life. We're really close. First, I think they like Yoonsang's sensitivity, second I think it's because we incite paternal love. We're innocent-dols but off stage, we're mischievous and friendly, so we're like a daughter (to fans)."
Jiae "They said they were already worried about what flower wreath should they send to our weddings. We also gained female fans during 'Now, We'. Many people said, "I want to be like that" "I want to wear that kind of clothes" while watching our stage. I think the concept is female fans' type."
JIN "We have a lot of fans with great manners. They made a fence (for us) when we were commuting to work and when we were going home, they asked for blankets (to cover our laps). They said we can't be exposed."

- The members laugh a lot.
Jisoo "The maknae is 20 years old so I think we all live young."
Yein "The unnies' mental ages are young. (The unnies fired, "Is that a compliment or a diss?") I would feel the happiest at the dorm. I opened my bedroom door and watched Soul, Mijoo and Jisoo unnie in the living room and they were talking about unimportant things and it was really funny. I thought, "I'm the happiest to be at this place where I can laugh at trivial things."

- When is the promotion that you remember the most?
All "'Now, We'"
Sujeong "We were rookies during 'Ah-Choo'. We couldn't just enjoy it. We got some space with 'Now, We' so I think we could enjoy the stage. The music matched well with the weather."

- Lovelyz has a special outlook on the world. Do you like it?
Soul "There's an outlook on the world in every song. There were various unrequited loves during our debut days. Sad unrequited love, light unrequited love, there's also heartbreaking unrequited love like 'Destiny'. In 'WoW', we dealt with a real world unrequited love and two-dimensional (characters) that couldn't meet. As time goes by, the feeling of uniqueness become distinct and now we too are waiting for what kind of world view will we sing."
Jiae "There's a lot of people who analyzed our songs."

- Is there a fan analysis that you remember the most?
Jiae "It's for 'Secret Journey'. It said, "They left for the afterlife." When I saw that, it was scary, so I asked Yoonsang and he said, "Not by a long shot." I just passed it over interestingly."

- It looks like you have pride for your songs.
Mijoo "Of course. Because we have a lot of good songs, we strongly recommend them to the people around us. When they play 'Doll', they're amazed and say that there's no idol song like this genre."

- You made many full albums and songs.
JIN "There's absolutely no songs to miss out on. The genre and the feeling are different. Before each recording, we formed an expectation, "Which song shall we record?""

- Is there a difficult point that you have on stage?
Jisoo "It's still hard for me to find the camera. I tell myself to remember but sometimes I forget and there are times where the producer shot from below. At that time, I can't do it naturally and my pupils shake."
JIN "Putting on a happy face while singing live. And looking at the camera at the same time. I can't do multiplay so it's hard. When I'm out of breath, my nostrils get bigger. Sometimes my lips get dry too.(Laughs)"

- It's time for musical greed.
Sujeong "I started writing songs and lyrics since I debuted at 19 years old. I wrote acoustic songs. If there's an opportunity, I want to include an acoustic song that has a Lovelyz feel to it in an album. Soul unnie also has a big interest in composing and writing lyrics. Her lyrics are really emotional and delicate."

- Where does that emotion come from?
Soul "From soju.(Laughs)"

- Do other members have interest in composing and writing lyrics?
Jisoo "I looked up the latest videos and asked the composer teacher if I could do it by myself. It was really fun. I properly learned. But the equipment is so expensive so first, I have to make more money.(Laughs)"
Mijoo "I sometimes play melodies on the piano but strangely, it was of songs that I've heard somewhere before. I tried writing lyrics too but they were lyrics that I've seen somewhere before.(Laughs)"
Yein "We're known for our ballads. I've thought about writing lyrics for a ballad song. Turning 20 years old, I want to experience love, so I scribble things alone. I don't know how to play the piano so when I think of a melody, I hit notes on the piano. I'm still at the early stage. If there is an opportunity, I want to try it."

- What do you want to do when you make a lot of money?
Mijoo "I want to go on a trip to Japan with my parents."
Soul "I want to buy a building for my parents."
Jisoo "Starting from a MacBook, I want to buy a (music) composing machine."
JIN "Start a business for my parents. I know how hard it is to start a business. I want to fix them a small cafe where they can manage it while sitting down."

- Jisoo started promotion since 'Ah-Choo'.
Jisoo "However I look at it, I debuted a year later than the members. I had a lot of thoughts and I couldn't focus. I thought, "Did I reduce the members' recognition/popularity?" It was too much to keep up with the members too. I thought, when I was on stage at that time, that people would throw rocks. I was worried that the members would get harmed."
JIN "At that time, Jisoo unnie's self-esteem was very low. She didn't have any confidence to do well.”

- When did you learn about Jisoo's concerns?
JIN "Honestly, she finds cameras just fine, she's also good at facial expression acting. I didn't know that she had such concerns because she did really well debuting like us. She confessed about her concerns to us a year ago. I was shocked when I knew about it."
Sujeong "There's something called 'Camera massage' (T/N: When someone looks better on camera). It was her first time appearing but she was really pretty. Every time she asks us, "What am I good at?", we responded, "Your face is pretty. Your face is doing good. Beauty is your specialty."

- You were a year late but you didn't look like it.
Jisoo "Everyone says that but I feel like only I lag behind. I try as hard as I can but I don't think I do as well as I thought."
Kei "Not only Jisoo unnie, everyone thinks that. I'm thinking that we compensate each other at where we're lacking."

- You were slightly nervous during 'WoW'.
JIN "I was with Sujeongie when I heard the guide. I applauded it, thinking that, "This can win first place." The guide version was really good."
Sujeong "It has the feeling of bubbly and new generation that is different from music from the past. During the 'WoW' promotion, I heard that we sold a lot of the albums. When I met fans at the fansign, they told me, "The competition is tough so it was really hard." So I was proud."
Yein "Japanese fans really like 'WoW'. So it feels the best when we perform 'WoW' in front of Japanese fans. I also felt really sorry to the unnies because my leg was injured during 'WoW'."

- I heard that 'WoW' went through a lot of modifications.
Kei "The lyrics changed a lot. I think the current 'WoW' has the best flow. The other versions might be 'crazy'.(Laughs)"

- How did you feel when you received the song 'Now, We'?
Mijoo "When I heard the guide, it wasn't that good. But the more I recorded it, the better it was. The peak was when the dance came out."
Sujeong "I couldn't participate when they were learning the choreography because I was filming 'Idol Drama Operation Team', so I watched it from a video. It was so good that I screamed. It was easy to follow and pretty too. I think the dance played a part in us winning first place."

- 'Now, We' is about a reciprocated love and it's different from your unrequited love songs.
Jisoo "They said that singers are like their song titles or lyrics. I think we won #1 because the song is about a love that is reciprocated for the first time."

- Do you have a favorite song among the songs that you've released so far?
Kei "'Ah-Choo'. It's a song that made Lovelyz start to be known.
Yein "For me, I really like the song 'Hi~'. It was a hard song to sing live so I was stressed throughout the promotion. After the promotion was done, I really like listening to it and because it's a song about a girl who confesses, it's my favorite."
JIN "We shot the music video for 'For You' in Okinawa. It was the first time that we shot outdoor so it's really memorable."

- Is there an episode when you were working overseas?
Sujeong "The members and staff played pranks on me when it was my first time on a plane. I knew it was a joke to take off your shoes before boarding a plane, but it was my first time to hear that we had to pay 500 won to use the lavatory. Other people said so, so I thought it was real."
Jisoo "Here, Japanese fans gifted us slippers to wear on the plane, so I thought it was trustworthy."

- When you were compared with other girl groups, is there a difference point that is only Lovelyz's?
Sujeong "I think it's hard to easily define it. If I had to pick our own color, I think it's that our songs are good to listen to for a long time. Our musical style is that it's unwavering and has the charm that makes you want to listen to it even as time goes by. I think it's not like a girl group song and we have musicality that all generations can relate to."

- You're going to have your second concert.
Yein "I want to quickly go on stage. My fluttering heart is big."
JIN "I want to convey my gratitude to fans, so we're having another concert in less than a year. The first concert was 'Lovelyz in Winterland', this time it's 'Lovelyz in Summerland'. What to slightly expect is sweat.(Laughs)"

- Do you have a hidden weapon prepared for the concert?
All "You'll know when you come and see."

- Is there any field that you'd like to do by yourself?
Kei "Musical."
Jisoo "I want to try composing."
Mijoo "I'm good at dancing so I want to act in a drama.(Laughs)"
Yein "I like ballad so I want to participate in a lot of O.S.T. I dream of becoming the second Taeyeon."
Sujeong "My role model, IU-sunbaenim. I want to be like her."

- What is Lovelyz's ambition in the future?
Yein "I hope you can happily smile when you see us. When you see the members having fun, people who see them can have fun too. My goal is (for us) to be a girl group that is fun and happy."
Kei "I want us to become a long-running girl group like Girls' Generation-sunbaenim."
